Up Close With the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse: Taking New Looks and Tech Off-Road If You Want It

Cars.com Road Test Editor Brian Normile explores the refreshed 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, specifically the range-topping RS and all-new Z71 off-road trim. While he hasn’t had a chance to drive the new Traverse to see how it performs, particularly with its all-new powertrain, what he saw is promising and should make the Traverse a more viable option in a highly competitive segment.

The looks of the new Traverse are more rugged, and while it isn’t a body-on-frame design like the larger Tahoe, the new styling makes it look a bit like a baby Tahoe. The Z71 gets both styling and functional updates that should make it a bit more capable off-road. It’s not a more serious Trail Boss or ZR2, so don’t expect too much, but the trim is more than just an appearance package. At the other end of the spectrum, the sporty-looking RS boasts blacked-out exterior trim and substantial 22-inch rims, as well as a sport-tuned suspension.

For 2024, the Traverse gains hands-free driving via GM’s Super Cruise technology, and this version includes both trailering support and automatic lane changes. Inside, the all-new — and standard — 17.7-inch touchscreen is a significant leap forward for the Traverse and the class as a whole.

Other interior updates include making the third row accessible from both sides of the SUV instead of the previous generation’s passenger-side access.
