Fleet Truck Friday: Digging into Truck Accident Management by Lauren Fletcher

Remember, every time a driver gets behind the wheel,
your organization is vulnerable to repercussions
that go far beyond just repairing a vehicle
if you’re not addressing safety and driver behavior.

“Accidents happen” should not be a common adage within any company. While today’s trucks are inherently safer than a decade before, accidents are still occurring and with fatal consequences.

Work Truck dug into current accident management statistics within vocational work truck fleets and checked in with a few experts in the field. A bigger picture is starting to form, and fleets must keep identifying ways to decrease incidents and enhance safety.

“Companies need to find the right balance between achieving business growth and applying safety standards to reduce accident claims,” said Connie Brinkmann, vice president of Risk Management for Enterprise Fleet Management. As claims happen and liability verdicts rise, commercial trucking employers must also put a greater focus on their hiring, supervision, and training procedures. If negligent hiring, supervision, or training procedures are found to be a contributor to the accident, the auto liability policy could be on the hook having a downward impact on insurability, premium increases, and attaching points of excess insurance layers.”

2022 CHEVROLET TAHOE AND SUBURBAN OFFER MORE POWER AND TECHNOLOGY

2021-09-27

  • Popular 6.2L V-8 engine option expands to three more trims: RST, Z71 and Premier
  • For Z71, the new, available electronic limited slip differential helps manage torque and increase driving confidence
  • A new, larger 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster now standard on LT trims and above
  • Google Assistant functionality allows drivers to adjust HVAC, control media and more with their voice

DETROIT — The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban will offer new features and additional technology, including more mechanical options, infotainment improvements and additional standard active safety features.

“Tahoe and Suburban customers keep coming back thanks to the capability, space and technology these vehicles bring to every road trip or daily drive,” said Kelly MacDonald, director, Chevrolet Truck Marketing. “Chevrolet keeps innovating with these popular full-size SUVs, and it’s part of the formula that makes them segment leaders.”

Expanded 6.2L V-8 engine availability and new eLSD option

For customers looking for power, the popular 6.2L V-8 engine rated at 420-horsepower is now available on the RST, Z71 and Premier. The 6.2L engine is standard on the High Country. This engine comes with dual exhaust and features Dynamic Fuel Management technology, designed to optimize engine efficiency across a broad range of driving conditions, including when towing a trailer. When the RST is ordered with the 6.2L V-8, customers also gain Magnetic Ride Control, one of the fastest-reacting damping systems in the industry. Magnetic Ride Control is standard on Premier and High Country and available on Z71.

The 5.3L V-8 remains the standard engine on LS, LT, Z71, RST and Premier models. The optional Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel is available on all models except Z71. All engines are mated to a standard 10-speed automatic transmission with push-button electronic shift.

New for 2022, the available electronic limited slip differential draws on sports car DNA to deliver improved driving performance in a full-size SUV. If wheel slip is detected on either side of the vehicle, eLSD reacts quickly to shift power to the wheel with better traction. That additional traction can contribute to increased driver confidence in difficult types of terrain and weather conditions. Available on the off-road focused Z71 trim, eLSD also can be used in 4WD Low to help prevent wheelslip in dirt and mud.

Enhanced trailering technology and larger driver information cluster

For 2022, Tahoe and Suburban will now offer up to 13 available, unique camera views1, including a transparent trailer view that helps the driver virtually “see through” a connected, compatible trailer when the truck is properly equipped. Additional new trailering views include a rear trailer view, a picture-in-picture side view, and a view inside a trailer when an accessory camera is connected.

A new, larger 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster is now standard on 2022 Tahoe and Suburban for LT trims and above. With four user-selectable layouts, this cluster allows drivers to (customize or personalize) display information in the way most comfortable for them during short trips or a long family adventure.

Seamless infotainment system with Google built-in compatibility

Today’s modern drivers increasingly expect seamless integration between their personal tech and vehicles. With Google built-in,2 standard on trims LT and above, drivers will have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play right on the vehicle display. This new experience works with Android AutoTM3 and Apple CarPlay4 capability and offers new levels of customization and flexibility for customers.

Rather than connect a smartphone and project onto the center screen, select Google apps and services are integrated into the vehicle’s hardwire. Users have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and in-vehicle applications on Google Play. The integration will continue to evolve over time, but 2022 Tahoe and Suburban customers will be able to control vehicle functions by voice or the steering wheel, including:

  • Phone calls and messaging (SMS), when phone paired
  • Audio volume
  • Changing AM/FM radio or SiriusXM channel (subscription required5)
  • Navigation using Google Maps
  • HVAC

The 2022 Tahoe and Suburban will continue to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

Additional standard active safety features6 and color choices

Safety is an important consideration for many Tahoe and Suburban customers.

The 2022 models have two active safety features now standard across all trims: Front and Rear Park Assist and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning uses a brief, gentle steering wheel turn to alert you when you may be unintentionally drifting out of detected lane lines. It is part of a suite of six standard active safety features called Chevy Safety Assist on every trim for the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban. In addition to Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Chevy Safety Assist also includes:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • IntelliBeam auto high beams

Buckle to Drive will be a standard feature on the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban to help remind drivers to buckle up before driving. The feature does not allow a shift out of park until the driver and front passenger, if detected, have their seat belts fastened. Buckling a seat belt is among the top ways drivers can protect themselves in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Additionally, Tahoe and Suburban also will offer new exterior colors: Evergreen Gray Metallic, Auburn Metallic and Dark Ash Metallic.

The 2022 Tahoe and Suburban will begin production in October.

ALL-NEW 2022 CHEVY SILVERADO ZR2 IS RACE-PROVEN

Preproduction truck driven by Chad Hall competes in Best In The Desert off-road racing series to validate off-road performance

2021-09-24

LAUGHLIN, Nev. – The first-ever Silverado ZR2, Chevy’s flagship off-road truck, makes its official racing debut in the Best In The Desert King Shocks Laughlin Desert Classic, but this truck is no stranger to competition.

Off-road racing champion Chad Hall has been competing in the full-size stock production class with a prototype Silverado ZR2 since 2019. Working with Chevrolet engineers, the team leverages racing to test and validate the truck’s off-road performance in some of the most extreme and grueling conditions in the world. The learnings are then used to develop components for production vehicles and performance parts.

“At Chevrolet, our motorsports philosophy is ‘sell what you race, and race what you sell.’ Competing in off-road racing puts our trucks and performance parts through extreme levels of abuse that most trucks will never encounter,” said Dom Lester, General Motors chief engineer for Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports Engineering. “The Silverado ZR2 is a perfect example of how that strategy delivers. We applied what we learned with Chad Hall’s experience in the prototype race truck to the production truck customers buy in the showroom.”

Since 2019, the prototype ZR2 race truck has competed in 10 professionally-sanctioned off-road races, including the legendary Vegas to Reno Best In The Desert race last month – the truck had a flawless race, stopping only to refuel. For the race debut today, the team simply updated the truck with ZR2 sheet metal to match the new production truck. All other major chassis, suspension and powertrain components are the same.

Links between the production truck and the race truck are significant as they share most of the major chassis and drivetrain components, including the robust, ladder-type frame, 420-horsepower 6.2L V-8 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, transfer case, front and rear differential, front skid plate and transfer case skid plate.

“It was exciting to help Chevrolet prove the Silverado ZR2’s off-road capability, hiding the prototype technologies in plain sight,” said Hall. “The tests and refinements made over the past couple of years absolutely prove the adage that racing improves the breed — making the production Silverado ZR2 a strong, capable off-road truck.”

First-ever Silverado ZR2

The 2022 Silverado ZR2 leads Chevy’s factory-lifted off-road lineup, offering race-proven off-road performance matched with a new, premium interior, immersive technology and a number of standard safety equipment features1 in a comprehensive package.

Suspension upgrades, enhanced off-road technology and exterior enhancements were developed to optimize off-road performance and capability — whether desert running or rock crawling — and balance everyday driving comfort, with payload and trailering capabilities comparable to other Silverado off-road trims. The ZR2’s max payload is 1,440 pounds2 and the conventional trailer weight rating is 8,900 pounds3.

Additional highlights include:

  • Standard 6.2L V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Silverado-first application of Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, which feature:
    • Three separate spool valves to control damping
    • Three connected chambers for fluid flow
  • Uniquely-tuned springs that, with the Multimatic dampers, increase maximum front and rear suspension travel, compared to the Silverado Trail Boss
  • Front and rear e-lockers
  • Specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, including Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal4 rock crawling
  • Specific 33-inch off-road MT tires
  • Unique skid plate package
  • New high-approach steel front bumper designed for off-road strength, durability and clearance, enabling an improved 31-degree approach angle, compared to other Silverado off-road models.
  • Chevy “flow-tie” emblem for increased air flow
  • Repositioned dual exhaust for added protection

Along with its functional features, the new Silverado ZR2 is distinguished by several aesthetic cues, including a new black hood insert, a unique grille with integrated lighting, wheel moldings, ZR2 badges, unique 18-inch wheels and an exclusive Jet Black/Graystone leather-trimmed interior with complementing dark trim.

The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 goes on sale in spring 2022.

FAST FACT: Chad Hall Racing also helped test the Chevy Colorado ZR2 off-road technologies in competition — and is still going strong with them. The Colorado ZR2 has been racing since 2017 in the Best In The Desert series and is the only truck in its class to have finished every race entered. It has accumulated more than 22,500 miles of racing experience.

1 Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for important feature limitations and information.

2 For comparison purposes only. See the owner's manual and the label on the vehicle door jamb for the carrying capacity of a specific vehicle.

3 Before you buy a vehicle or use it for trailering, carefully review the Trailering section of the Owner’s Manual. The weight of passengers, cargo and options or accessories may reduce the amount you can tow.

4 You should always use your brake pedal if you need to stop quickly.
