CHEVROLET AND GMC EXPAND ALTERNATIVE FUEL FLEET OFFERINGS

Expanded CNG/LPG lineup broadens fuel diversification choices

DETROIT —Chevrolet and GMC announced today that they are partnering with Power Solutions International, Inc. (PSI) to introduce heavy-duty pickups and full-size vans powered by 6.0-liter V-8 compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-capable engines starting in the first quarter of 2017. Chevrolet also will offer CNG and LPG versions of its new Low Cab Forward commercial truck.

The announcement follows the selection of PSI, based in Wood Dale, Illinois, as General Motors Fleet’s preferred upfitter for CNG and LPG trucks. PSI is one of North America’s largest and most experienced providers of integrated turn-key, alternative-fuel powertrain solutions.

Ship-through will be offered, allowing customers to seamlessly order and take delivery from the same dealer. GM will supply vehicles equipped with the 6.0L V-8 engine with hardened valves and valve seats to PSI, which in turn will install the fuel system and other hardware and ship directly to Chevrolet and GMC dealers in all 50 states. All PSI-modified vehicles are covered by Chevrolet and GMC’s five-year/60,000-mile (whichever comes first) limited powertrain warranty.

The expanded lineup brings GM Fleet’s portfolio of alternative fuel, hybrid and EVs to more than a dozen trucks, cars and crossovers. Other recent additions include the Chevrolet Bolt EV, a Duramax 2.8-liter B20-capable Duramax diesel for the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans and all-new available 6.6-liter B20-capable Duramax diesel engines for the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.

“Expanding choice is the key to helping more commercial and government fleets reduce their fuel consumption, fuel costs and emissions using alternative fuels and EVs versus using traditional gasoline,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet. “There are no ‘one size fits all’ solutions for fleet managers.”

GM Fleet’s partnership with PSI follows customer demand and ongoing investment by companies across the nation in CNG refueling infrastructure.

This month, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced 55 routes that will serve as the basis for a national network of “alternative fuel” corridors spanning 35 states. Though the network is nearly 85,000 miles long, more miles will be added in the future to accommodate electric, hydrogen, propane and natural gas vehicles as additional fueling and charging stations are built. Currently four of the top five “Green Fleets,” as identified by Bobit Media Group, operate CNG-powered vehicles. All of the top 25 fleets use at least two fuels.

GM Fleet: Expanding Alternative Fuel Vehicle Options

Including 2017 and 2018 models, Chevrolet and GMC will offer more than 25 different cars, trucks and vans that use alternate fuels or electric propulsion.

New Colorado ZR2 a “Segment of One” Among Off-Road Pickups

LOS ANGELES – Just as introduction of the Chevrolet Colorado reset the bar for mid-size trucks, the new Colorado ZR2 is poised to reset expectations for off-road trucks. Chevy’s new performance halo for the Colorado lineup will feature more off-road technology than any other mid-size pickup when it goes on sale.

The ZR2 is effectively a segment of one, combining the nimbleness and maneuverability of a mid-size pickup with a host of new off-road features and the most off-road technology of any vehicle in its segment.

Compared to a standard Colorado, the ZR2 features a much wider track and a lifted suspension. Functional rockers have been added for better performance over rocks and obstacles, and the front and rear bumpers have been modified for better off-road clearance.

Class-exclusive features include front and rear electronic locking differentials, available diesel engine, and the first off-road application of Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) damper technology.

As a result, the Colorado ZR2 delivers exceptional performance in a variety of scenarios – from technical rock crawling to tight two-track trails to high-speed desert running to daily driving.

“Our engineers have been incredibly successful developing Corvette and Camaro performance variants with broad performance envelopes,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “The ZR2 applies that same philosophy to off-road performance. You can go rock crawling on Saturday, desert running on Sunday, and comfortably drive to work on Monday. This truck can do it all, and do it all well.”

First off-road application of Multimatic DSSV dampers

To achieve this unprecedented balance of on- and off-road performance, the Chevy engineering team turned to a surprising partner in creating the ZR2’s dampers, which are the heart of any off-road truck.

Multimatic Inc., based in Markham, Ontario, is a renowned maker of high-performance Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers as used in championship-winning motorsport vehicles, including recent Formula One winners.

The first volume production vehicle to use DSSV dampers was the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 will be the first application of Multimatic DSSV damper technology to an off-road vehicle.

“From our experience on Z/28, we knew the performance advantages offered by DSSV dampers, “ said Mark Dickens, executive director, Performance Variants, Performance Parts, and Motorsports Engineering, Chevrolet. “We also know that Multimatic’s motorsport development mentality would allow us to bring a uniquely precise and repeatable custom damper to market even more quickly than a traditional damper system.”

Compared to deflected-disk valving common on most dampers, the ZR2 employs spool valves that offer increased precision and manufacturing repeatability along with enhanced ride and handling performance both on- and off-road.

The Colorado ZR2’s DSSV dampers are position-sensitive. Their aluminum bodies each house two spool valves providing both compression and rebound damping optimized for everyday driving. During extreme off-road use, a third, piston-mounted spool valve delivers additional, uniquely tuned, compression damping. The front dampers also employ a separate rebound valve, which comes into play when the suspension approaches full extension.

“A traditional, deflected-disc damper only offers two force-velocity curves for tuning,” Dickens said. “The ZR2 dampers offer six tuning curves for the front, four at the rear. For the driver, this translates to greater confidence and control in a wider range of driving experiences.”

Design meets mud, sand, and rock

Visually, the production version of the Colorado ZR2 closely resembles the concept shown at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Consumer response to that concept was so overwhelming, the team knew they needed to carry as much of the original design into production as possible.

“For both the concept and the production versions of ZR2, the exterior design was shaped by the desire to improve capability driving over mud, sand, and rock,” said Rich Scheer, director of design for Chevrolet Truck. “The wider, more aggressive stance, modified front, and rear bumpers, and even the bed-mounted, spare-tire carrier all improve performance driving over rough terrain.”

Compared to a Colorado Z71, the ZR2 has a more aggressive side profile, with the suspension lifted two inches for greater ground clearance. The steel-tube, functional rocker protectors will be standard equipment on the ZR2 and are strong enough to protect the body side while dragging the truck against a rock face.

The ZR2 also features 17 x 8-inch aluminum wheels, in a pattern exclusive to the ZR2, wrapped in 31-inch Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires for exceptional traction.

The front and rear track has been widened by three-and-a-half inches, with new cast-iron control arms for greater durability in off-road situations. As a result, the ZR2 offers greater wheel travel and stability while traversing steep grades.

The front bumper of the ZR2 has tapered ends, to increase the tire clearance when approaching obstacles. The bumper also integrates a thick, aluminum skid plate protecting the radiator and engine oil pan, while the transfer case is protected by an additional shield. Above the bumper, the ZR2 features a more aggressive grille and hood – with black insert – to complement the other exterior changes.

A bed-mounted spare tire carrier, seen on reveal vehicles at the Los Angeles Auto Show, will be available as an accessory. “The bed-mounted spare tire adds a rugged look to ZR2 and serves a functional purpose. By relocating the spare to the bed, ZR2’s departure is improved and prevents any damage to the spare when you’re crawling over obstacles,” said Scheer.

Class-exclusive electronic lockers, available diesel engine

The ZR2 also features the most sophisticated four-wheel-drive system in the segment. With class-exclusive, electronic-locking differentials front and rear and Chevrolet’s AutoTrac transfer case, the ZR2 offers nine drive configurations:

•    2WD
•    2WD, locked rear differential
•    Auto 4WD
•    Auto 4WD, locked rear differential
•    4WD Hi, locked transfer case
•    4WD Hi, locked transfer case and locked rear differential
•    4WD Lo, locked transfer case
•    4WD Lo, locked transfer case and locked rear differential
•    4WD Lo, locked transfer case, locked front, and rear differentials

Extensive work was done to integrate the electronic lockers and allow them to seamlessly interact with the traction control, stability control, and hill-descent control. In addition, a new “Off-Road Mode” button, in combination with the traction control switch, allows the anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control calibrations to be tailored to different driving conditions. Off-road Mode also alters the throttle progression and shifts calibrations to give the driver better control and responsiveness.

The ZR2 shares its powertrains with the 2017 Colorado, and it will be the only extreme production off-road truck to offer the choice of gas or diesel engines.

The all-new 3.6L V-6, mated to a class-exclusive Hydra-Matic 8L45 8-speed automatic transmission, yields 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, while the class-exclusive Duramax diesel engine produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and will provide excellent range to overland drivers.

Even with all of the off-roading upgrades over the base truck, the ZR2 can still tow up to 5,000 lbs. – enough to pull a camper, trailer dirt bikes, jet skis, snowmobiles, and other toys – or carry 1,100 lbs. of payload.

As such, the Colorado ZR2 offers a distinct position in the market: Compared to other midsize trucks, the Colorado offers an unrivaled suite of powertrain technologies; compared to full-size off-road trucks, the ZR2 is about a foot narrower and 500 pounds lighter, enabling greater agility over obstacles and better trail access.

“It’s amazing what a difference a foot of width makes off-road,” said Dickens. “The smaller size of the Colorado is a huge enabler for taking the ZR2 more places, and getting it through tighter spots than you could access with a full-size truck.”

New, off-road development track at GM’s Yuma Proving Ground

For the development of the Colorado ZR2, Chevrolet developed new off-road test areas at General Motors’ Yuma, Arizona Proving Ground.

The Yuma Proving Ground is located on 2,400 acres of land in southeastern Arizona. Opened in 2009, Yuma features a range of tracks, laboratories, and courses.

The new off-road facility features a multitude of off-road simulations, including high-speed desert sand trails; low-speed, loose river rock crossings; and steep, technical hill climbs and descents.

Yuma Proving Ground’s new off-road course allowed the team to test multiple iterations of components on the ZR2 is a single day. These components were then tested a real-world facilities like Moab, Johnson Valley, and Rubicon to ensure the ZR2 is trail-ready right from the factory.

Silverado 1500 High Desert Offers Flexible Storage Options

SEMA Show truck based on production
2017 Silverado High Desert package

LAS VEGAS ― With premium leather interior accents and unique appearance enhancements, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Desert SEMA Show vehicle is the ultimate expression of Chevy Trucks’ functional style and performance.

It is based on the production High Desert package offered on 2017 Silverado 1500 LT, LTZ and High Country models, featuring an all-new, lockable and water-resistant cargo system and available Magnetic Ride Control suspension.

The storage system creates a unique profile for the truck, with sail panels inspired by the Chevrolet Avalanche.

“The new High Desert package blends the capability and utility of Silverado with even greater refinement,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet truck marketing. “It’s ideal for those customers who want the security of a lockable cargo area as well as the flexibility of a pickup truck bed.”

The flexible, lockable storage system is mounted over the roll-formed, high-strength steel bed to add dual side storage bins and a three-piece hard tonneau cover. Inside, a cargo divider can be raised to secure smaller items or lowered to access the full length of the bed floor. As with all Silverado LT, LTZ, and High Country models, the tailgate locks with the key fob, enabling users to secure their cargo with the push of a button.

The High Desert package on the LT trim level features 20-inch wheels with all-season tires, while 22-inch wheels and all-terrain tires are available on LTZ and High Country trim levels.

The High Desert is also the first Silverado offered with Magnetic Ride Control suspension, which delivers more precise body motion control. Its sensors “read” the road every millisecond, triggering damping changes in as few as 5 milliseconds in electronically controlled shock absorbers that replace the conventional mechanical-valve shocks.

Silverado’s 6.2L V-8 is available on LTZ and High Country models and is backed by the new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine is SAE-certified at 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful engine offered in a light-duty truck.

The new performance exhaust kit adds 7 horsepower and a throatier note to the available 6.2L V-8 engine. Chevrolet also offers a performance exhaust kit for models equipped with the 5.3L V-8 engine that adds 10 horsepower.

The show vehicle also includes several concept accessories and performance parts, such as 22-inch wheels with anodized bronze finish, a bold CHEVROLET grille insert, a performance air intake and a painted engine cover.

The truck’s Slate Blue exterior is accented with bronze-tinted trim, while the interior features a unique High Desert theme with Cocoa leather seat inserts, brown accent stitching and embroidered headrests. Additional features include heated and vented front seats, wireless charging, heated steering wheel, Bose® audio system and Chevrolet MyLink with an 8-inch-diagonal color touchscreen and navigation.

“This Silverado High Desert is dressed to impress, inspired by the successful legacy of premium, special-edition models Chevrolet has introduced recently,” said Piszar. “As our customers continue to integrate their trucks in more personal ways, we’ll continue to offer more unique choices that speak to their lifestyles and interests.”

Silverado HD Carhartt Concept Blends Capability and Style

Worksite-ready Chevy Truck is powered
by all-new Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel

DETROIT — The 2017 Silverado 2500HD Carhartt concept vehicle is a truck built to tackle the toughest jobs while integrating the rugged aesthetics of hard-working lifestyles, reflected in the resiliency and versatility of the iconic work jackets.

“Chevrolet HD trucks are designed for hard work, and just like your favorite Carhartt, their functionality transcends the workplace to become a style statement,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Truck marketing director. “This concept vehicle mirrors the lifestyles of countless Chevy truck owners, demonstrating the personal connections with the tools of their trades.”

Connecting two American brands that help their owners earn a living, often simultaneously, connecting Chevrolet HD trucks and Carhartt seems as natural as unloading drywall from the bed of a Silverado 2500HD at a chilly worksite while wearing one of the renowned work jackets.

“Thousands of people go to work every day and earn their paycheck in a Chevy truck while wearing a Carhartt,” said Piszar. “Those products’ durability and versatility earn respect and loyalty that’s passed on — and that’s exactly what this concept explores.”

Durability is expressed in the texture of the concept’s distinctively trimmed Jet Black interior, which features Carhartt’s signature duck brown garment material on the seats, armrests and door panel inserts, with triple-stitched seams just like the jackets. The Carhartt logo is laser-etched on the headrests, while antique nickel-finish trim is used on the doors, center console and instrument panel.

"When Carhartt and Chevy started working together on this concept truck, we quickly realized that our mutual respect for hardworking people and the utility they expect from our brands would equal the ultimate truck for anyone who works and plays in the rugged outdoors,” said Tony Ambroza, senior vice president of marketing at Carhartt. “For more than 127 years, Carhartt has designed workwear by solving for the needs and practical ways hardworking people use every product we make, and that’s the same kind of thinking we applied to this collaboration.”

Carhartt’s tough fabric is also used for a custom concept tonneau cover.
A number of Chevrolet Accessories and concept parts enhance the truck’s appearance and functionality. The Chevrolet Accessories include:
•    Trailering mirrors with camera system
•    Black bowtie emblems
•    All-weather floor liners
•    Assist steps
•    Perimeter bed lighting
•    Bed-mounted toolbox and swing-out tool chest (associated accessories)

The additional concept and custom equipment includes:
•    20-inch LED light bar
•    Electrical outlets in the bed
•    Antique nickel accents on the grille, mirror caps, tow rings and 20-inch aluminum wheels
•    Carhartt gold pinstripe graphics

The Silverado 2500HD Carhartt concept features a unique, two-tone Carbon Flash exterior finish, with a matte finish above the beltline and high-gloss black on the bottom half.

Next-generation Duramax 6.6L
The concept is powered by the all-new, next-generation Duramax 6.6L V-8 turbo-diesel engine offered in the 2017 Silverado HD lineup. It delivers more horsepower and torque than ever — an SAE-certified 445 horsepower (332 kW) and net 910 lb.-ft. (1,234 Nm) — for easier, more confident hauling and trailering.

Along with a 19 percent increase in max torque over the current Duramax 6.6L, the new engine’s performance is quieter and smoother, for greater refinement. It also advances the Duramax’s legacy of low-rpm torque production, offering 90 percent of peak torque at a low 1,550 rpm and sustaining it through 2,850 rpm.

“With nearly 2 million sold over the past 15 years, customers have forged a bond with the Duramax diesel based on trust and capability,” said Dan Nicholson, vice-president, Global Propulsion Systems. “The new Duramax takes those traits to higher levels.”

Models equipped with the new Duramax 6.6L incorporate a unique induction system that draws air through a bold intake scoop on the hood.

The Carhartt concept will join approximately 20 additional Chevrolet models at the SEMA Show Nov. 1-3 in Las Vegas. Follow the action at ChevySEMA.com, #CHEVYSEMA, @ChevroletPerformance on Instagram and Chevrolet Performance on Facebook.

TODCO Introduces WeatherTite Pro™: The Lightest Weather-Resistant Roll-up Door for Trucks and Trailers

New lighter co-polymer roll-up door is 100-percent recyclable.

Marion, OH (October 2016) – TODCO, Transportation Division of Overhead Door Corporation, introduces WeatherTite™ Pro,  the next generation weather-resistant roll-up door for trailer and truck body applications.  WeatherTite Pro improves upon the proven TODCO WeatherTite™ door that eliminated the problems of swelling, warping, finish delamination and rotting experienced with wood roll-up doors when it was introduced 15 years ago.  WeatherTite Pro takes these benefits to a new level, utilizing 100 percent recyclable and highly engineered co-polymer panels that dramatically reduce weight and improve heat tolerance.

A WeatherTite Pro panel weighs 25 percent less than standard WeatherTite panels and 37 percent less than ¾”wood and ¼” plate-style panels, increasing payload potential.  The lighter door weight will also allow the option of installing a long-life counterbalance spring that reduces costly downtime and maintenance costs.

Results of ASTM D648 Heat Deflection Testing at 66 psi conducted by TODCO shows WeatherTite Pro has a 23 percent higher heat tolerance than standard WeatherTite panels, reducing the opportunity for warpage in hotter climates.

Additional features of WeatherTite Pro include:
•    Improved impact resistance
•    Smooth panel surface – Allows for an automotive quality paint finish and excellent decal adhesion
•    Automotive grade UV stability and finish color
•    Anti-Pinch Panel Joint – Eliminates pinch point at panel joint to improve safety and reduce injuries and workmen’s compensation costs
•    Anti-Drip Design – Prevents water from the exterior of the door from dripping between panels onto cargo when in operation and moving through the radius
•    Interchangeable with current WeatherTite panels
•    Available with 1” or 2” track and rollers
•    10-Year limited warranty

The list of available options includes 1” and 2” SupeRollers™ that have been tested to last up 5X longer than standard steel rollers and EZ Seals™, dual durometer side seals that reduce seal installation time by 50% compared to rubber seals.

The WeatherTite Pro roll-up door was previewed at this year’s NTEA Work Truck Show, ATA’s Technology and Maintenance Council Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition, and Truck World in Canada.

Headquartered in Marion, Ohio, TODCO manufactures and services roll up doors, swing doors and walkramps for the trucking industry.  The company maintains manufacturing plants in Marion, Ohio and Tecate, Mexico.  For more information, go to www.todco.com.
